Ryerson University

The Ryerson University campus was founded in 1948 and named after Egerton Ryerson (1803-1882), Chief Superintendent of Education for Canada West. Its roots, however, go back much further. In 1850, under Egerton Ryerson’s supervision, a parcel of land known as St. James Square was purchased to house the Normal School, Canada’s first training facility for teachers. Today, Ryerson University sits on that same parcel of land.

As of September of 2006, Ryerson boasted over 21,000 full-time students. With more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, Ryerson is a crucial part of the Toronto community. Every September, a common site in downtown Toronto is a large group of first-year Ryerson students getting the city tour from enthusiastic orientation volunteers.

Ryerson is most well-known for its Faculty of Business. It boasts the largest English-speaking undergraduate business program in Canada. Ryerson’s undergraduate business program, as well as its new MBA program, groom many future entrepreneurs and CEOs.

Ryerson also has its highly regarded School of Radio and Television Arts, the only four-year broadcasting degree in Canada. In this program students can learn all aspects of the production of radio and television broadcasts. Rick Brace, current president of Canada’s CTV television network, graduated from Ryerson. Canadian radio and television is full of Ryerson graduates, both in behind the scenes positions and as anchors, DJs, and reporters. Natalie Glebova, Canada’s winner of Miss Universe 2005, earned her Bachelor of Commerce in Information Technology Management and Marketing at Ryerson University.

Ryerson is also home to the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, Canada’s leading provider of adult education, offers over 1,000 courses designed to provide adults with career-oriented certificates.
