Lakehead University is a comprehensive university with campuses in Thunder Bay and Orilla, Ontario. Known as LU, the university is provincially-supported and non-denominational. It has more than 45,000 alumni living and working in more than 67 countries around the world. The university's main campus is in Thunder Bay, and in 2006, it opened a permanent satellite campus in Orilla. The university has one of the largest percentages of First Nations students in Canada.

The university traces its origin to the foundation of Lakeahead Technical Institute in 1946, a school founded to provide technical training in the wake of World War II. The first courses began in 1948 in rented classrooms in Port Arthur. The current university formed when Lakehead Technical Institute merged with Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology, which had been founded in 1957.

Faculty & Academics

Lakehead University is famous for its innovative research programs and high end research initiatives. The university divides its academic offerings into nine faculties: business administration, education, engineering, natural resource management, health and behavioural sciences, science and environmental studies, social sciences and humanities, medicine, and graduate studies. A tenth faculty, law, launched in 2013.

The greatest number of students (29%) study in social sciences and humanities, followed by health and behavioural sciences (21%). Medicine as the smallest enrollment, with only 1.7% of students.

The Orilla campus offers multidisciplinary degrees that combine the arts and sciences with concurrent education, and it offers continuing education students with existing degrees to complete a new business administration degree in as little as a year.

Student Life

Students at LU are represented by the Lakehead University Student Union, which also runs the university's clubs and extracurricular organizations. The student newspaper is called the Argus, and students gather at the university's two student run restaurants, the Study Coffeehouse and the Outpost Pub.

The university offers a range of indoor and outdoor sporting activities at the recreational, intramural, junior varsity, and varsity levels. Varsity sports include basketball, cross-country, hockey, skiing, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. The university sports teams are known as the Thunderwolves, and LU competes as part of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport League.

Student residences are divided into traditional dormitories, apartments, and townhouses. The Thunder Bay campus houses 1,196 students and offers a range of dining options, from kitchen service to full meal plans. The newest residences, the townhouses, opened in 1992.

The Orilla campus houses 271 students, and the Orilla campus is part of a green initiative aiming to make it Canada's greenest and most sustainable campus. This ties in with Orilla's focus on environmental sciences and green technology.
