Nipissing University, a public liberal arts university, was established in 1967 as an affiliate of Laurentian University before achieving independence in 1992. The university traces its origins to 1909 when it was founded as the North Bay Normal School, a training school for teachers. In 1953, it became the North Bay Teachers' College before becoming the new Nipissing University College's faculty of education upon the establishment of the new school in 1967. The university is perhaps best known for being depicted in the comic strip For Better or Worse, where one of the characters studied education at the school.

Today, Nipissing University remains primarily focused on teacher training, and it is one of the most important and well-regarded teacher training schools in Canada.
