York University
The York University Campus was founded in 1959. The fist class was held in September 1960 at Falconer Hall to a total of 76 students. York has seen a steady increase each year since then. With an enrollment of over 50,000 students and 7,000 faculty members, York has earned its place as Canada’s third largest university. Originally regarded as an isolated campus in Northern Toronto, the city has grown such that York now occupies the central part of the Greater Toronto Area.
Since York is still a young university that is growing each year, its facilities remain at the cutting edge. New buildings are constantly being erected, and York’s campus, once criticized for being too expansive, is beginning to fill out. A new student centre, a small shopping mall, a hockey arena, and a tennis stadium that has hosted the Canadian Open Tennis Tournament for years are examples of the growth of the York University campus. York University’s sports facilities include a stadium, four gymnasia, five outdoor playing fields, for baseball diamonds, nine outdoor tennis courts, five squash courts, three dance studios, a hockey rink, a swimming pool, and a fitness centre that is experiencing constant growth.
From an academic standpoint, York boasts twenty-one research centres that are dedicated to carrying out cutting edge research projects that benefit the whole world. York offers over 5,000 courses in ten faculties. York’s five libraries contain over six-and-a-half million items!
In York’s relatively short existence it has boasted a large number of important graduates. The long list includes NDP leader Jack Layton, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada Bora Laskin, business tycoon Edward Samuel Rogers, actress Rachel McAdams, astronaut Steve MacLean, and Toronto Argonauts football player Jeff Johnson.
