Brock University was founded in 1963 and named for Sir Isaac Brock, a British-Canadian commander during the War of 1812. Brock lost his life in the war, and his dying word, "surgite!" (push on!), became the college's motto. The school opened on October 19, 1964 under the authority of the provincial Brock University Act of 1964. At first classes had to be held at St. Paul St. United Church for more than three months before the main campus was ready to receive its first class of students.

Faculty & Academics
Brock University organizes its academic programs in seven divisions: applied health sciences, business, education, humanities, mathematics and science, social science, and graduate studies. It offers a wide range of subjects, including all of the major divisions of academia. The school is well known for its applied health sciences, which cover everything from kinesiology to public health to leisure studies, a major new field of academic research.
Brock University also offers extensive coop education, which combines formal classroom learning with work experience. Brock's business program offers Canada's most extensive coop education program, with the highest placement rate in Canada: 100%. The accounting program is routinely ranked as Canada's best.
In the sciences, Brock is the only university offering an honors bachelor's in oenology and viticulture, made possible by the school's location on the Niagara Peninsula.
Student Life
Brock University offers fourteen varsity level sports, in everything from soccer to squash, from baseball to wrestling. The school has won more nearly 50 provincial championships and more than two dozen national championships in its sporting history.

Students are represented by the Brock University Student Union, which also operates student-run businesses within the Alumni Students' Center. There are two large theatres at the Brock Centre for the Arts which present exciting and entertaining programs, while the college also owns Rodman Hall, a downtown art gallery.
Almost 3,000 students live in the college's six St Catharines residence halls. The majority are first year students, and their food services are provided by Sodexho. The oldest residence hall was built in 1969 and was designed by world-famous architect John Andrews. The newest residence hall opened in 2003.
