It is Canada's only research university located in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Brock University was founded in 1963 and named for Sir Isaac Brock, a British-Canadian commander during the War of 1812. Brock lost his life in the war, and his dying word, "surgite!" (push on!), became the college's motto. The school opened on October 19, 1964 under the authority of the provincial Brock University Act of 1964. At first classes had to be held at St. Paul St. United Church for more than three months before the main campus was ready to receive its first class of students.
