Technical Essay - University of Ontario Institute of Technology

technical essay writing

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is a public research university founded in 2002 under the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Act of 2002. It opened in 2003, becoming Canada's newest university. The university shares a campus with Durham College, and it is the only laptop-based higher education institution in Canada. All students are required to lease an IBM Lenovo Thinkpad, a type of laptop PC, as part of the terms of enrollment. The university focuses on science and technology, offering a range of degree programs in those areas. Faculty encourage students to use their laptops to take notes, participate in projects, and complete assignments.

Faculty & Academics

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology offers a range of degree programs divided among several faculties: business and information technology, social sciences and humanities, education, energy systems and nuclear science, applied science, health sciences, and science. Within these seven faculties, more than fifty individual programs are offered at the undergraduate level, and at least a dozen at the graduate level. Faculty at the school are engaged in a wide range of research, in subjects ranging from communication and computing to engineering, manufacturing, and fuels. In its research, its academics, and its outreach, the school lives up to its name, focusing on science and technology at both the theoretical and practical levels. The university intends to continue growing and expanding its program offerings in the years and decades to come.

Student Life

The university has a unique relationship to its four fraternities and sororities. No fraternity or sorority is officially recognized, nor does the school have a Greek row. At the same time, the Greek Council, which represents these unrecognized organizations is formally recognized by the Student Association. About 170 of the school's 9,000 students are members of a fraternity or sorority. Beyond Greek life, the school has dozens of clubs and organizations arranged around academic and professional interests, including societies dedicated to engineering, health sciences, business, and computer science. A new virtual hospital for nursing students has opened, and a new cybercrime research center is planned. The university has recently expanded its athletic facilities, and students can enjoy the athletic center, ice center, tennis center, recreation center, and other facilities. The university shares a campus with Durham College, and students have easy access to the amenities of downtown Oshawa.
