Saint Paul University is a small Catholic school affiliated with the University of Ottawa. It was established by an act of the former Province of Canada in 1866 and a promulgation of Pope Leo XIII in 1889. It offers services in both English and French as a full bilingual institution.
The school began as the College of Bytown in 1856 before receiving its official charter from the government as the College of Ottawa in 1866. The school grew to the point that the government of Ontario felt that a division was needed between the secular and the religious functions of the now-large college. When it became necessary to promote the school to a university, it was divided into the University of Ottawa, to handle secular education, and Saint Paul University, which retained Catholic and religious educational duties.

Faculty & Academics
As a small Roman Catholic institution, the university offers only four programs: human sciences, philosophy, theology, and canon law. Within these programs are nineteen disciplines, taught at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels: Anglican Studies, Biblical Studies, Canon Law, Canonical Practice, Conflict Studies, Counseling and Spirituality, Eastern Christian Studies, Ecclesiastical Administration, Ethics, Group Facilitation, First Nations Leadership, Interreligious Dialogue, Ministry, Mission Studies, Pastoral Theology, Philosophical Theology, Philosophy, Public Ethics, Religious Education, Social Communications, Spirituality, and Theology. Programs are designed to lead to ordination in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, or Eastern Orthodox Church.
Student Life
Since the college is very small, the student experience is unique to each of the few students. Nearly half of the college's students attend part time, balancing religious studies with other duties. Consequently, there is a close-knit feel to the college community, but also fewer extracurricular opportunities than at larger universities. As an affiliate of the University of Ottawa, additional extracurricular opportunities are available through that school.
