Faculty & Academics

York University offers a wide range of undergraduate majors and minors across the spectrum of academic subjects, as well as several dozen specialized postgraduate programs. These programs are offered across eleven faculties: the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, the Faculty of Science, the Schulich School of Business, Osgoode Hall Law School, Glendon College, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Environmental Studies, the Lassonde School of Engineering, and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. York also has 28 research centres in areas which include science, technology, history, culture, and criminal justice.

York University consistently ranks as one of Canada's ten best, and it frequently ranks among the 400 best in the world. Notable programs at York include its highly-regarded teacher education program, its law school, and its internationally-recognized business program, which received the prestigious Schulich designation. Among international MBA programs outside the United States, York's ranks tenth according to Forbes, the highest Canadian showing in the category. The MBA program is routinely ranked one of Canada's three best and in the top fifty worldwide, depending on the ranking agency. The law school ranks in the top five for Canada and among the top fifty in the world.

Student Life

York is one of Canada's most internationally diverse schools, with students from around the world among the university's 50,000 students. The university is organized into nine residential colleges, and students are affiliated with one of the nine colleges. These are: Calumet, Founders, Glendon, McLaughlin, New College, Norman Bethune, Stong, Vanier, and Winters. To serve this massive student population, the university offers 290 student clubs and organizations representing academic, professional, and recreational interests across the spectrum of activities and causes. York also offers six student-run publications, three broadcast programs, six art galleries, 33 on-campus eateries, and a retail mall to serve its student population.

While first year students typically live on campus, many upper year and postgraduate students reside in the Village, a Toronto neighborhood adjacent to the campus. In March, these students host an annual Battle of the Village kegger, and the large number of student parties has led to frequent noise complaints from non-student residents of the Village. The main campus is full of new additions like the glass student center, updated restaurants and entertainment in the area that make for a full university experience.         

Athletics are offered at the intramural, junior varsity, and varsity levels, including 29 interuniversity sport teams, 12 sport clubs, 35 intramural sport leagues, special events, and 10 daily pick-up sport activities. The university sports teams were originally known as the Yeomen, but the term Yeowomen was used to encourage more female sport participation. Students disliked the name, and in 2003, the teams were rebranded the Lions.
