Queen's University at Kingston is a public research university at Kingston, Ontario, whose founding in 1841 makes it older than Canada itself. The Church of Scotland founded the school under charter from Queen Victoria, and it is the first major university in Canada west of the Maritime Provinces to admit women and the first to form a student union. It was also the first university to offer extension courses for non-matriculated students.
The early history of the school was marked by repeated financial crisis, due both to the limitations of the Presbyterian sponsors as well as the financial turmoil surrounding the unification of Canada in 1867. In time, the university contemplated merging with the University of Toronto until another source of funding was ultimately found. In 1912, the school separated from the Church of Scotland and became a public university, adopting its current name.
Following another financial crisis brought on by World War I, the school entered a phase of expansion, growing rapidly to meet the needs of the modern world. The university added new programs, built new buildings, and saw enrollment double and then double again.

Faculty & Academics
The majority of the academic activity at Queen's University is centered on undergraduate education, with the largest numbers of students enrolled in the social science and engineering programs, two areas for which the university is particularly renowned. As a major university, the school offers a wide range of potential majors, in areas ranging from the arts and sciences to medicine and psychology. Each year, Queen's University confers more than 3,000 bachelor's degrees and 1,800 graduate and doctoral degrees.

Student Life
The students of Queen's University have two student unions representing them, one for graduate students and another for undergraduates. These two organizations are responsible for running the more than 170 extracurricular clubs and activities at the university, which run the gamut from academic organizations to faith organizations and recreational clubs. Fraternities and sororities, however, have been banned at Queen's University since 1933. Students pay a mandatory fee to support the Student Constables, a safety monitoring group run by students but, despite its name, not actually empowered to enforce laws as peace officers.
Varsity sports at Queen's University are played in the Ontario University Athletics conference of Canada Interuniversity Sport and include basketball, cross country, Canadian football, ice hockey, rowing, rugby, soccer and volleyball. The football team is the country's most decorated, having won more championships than any other football club in the country, and more than any other sports team at the school.
Resident students live in one of sixteen residence halls, and more than 80 percent of first year students reside on campus. Overall, more than one in four students lives on campus. The center of student life on Queen's campus is, appropriately enough, called the Student Life Centre.
