Essay Writing Ottawa  - Carleton University Students

management essay writing

Carleton University was named for the now-defunct county of Carleton, which housed the university when it was first made a university in 1957 under the Carleton University Act (amending the Carelton College Act of 1952). Although the county disappeared, Carleton University remained. It had been founded ten years earlier as Carleton College, offering night courses in a rented building in Ottawa, focusing primarily on public administration and introductory subjects. After World War II, the college expanded to serve the population of returning veterans. It bestowed its first degree in 1946.

In 1952, the college became Canada's first private, non-sectarian college, and the school purchased its own land, creating the campus where it is still housed today. In 1967, Carleton absorbed Saint Patrick's College, which eventually became the School of Social Work at Carleton in 1979. Carleton continued expanding in order to offer postgraduate education, and the campus has grown to keep pace, becoming a large, modern university.

Faculty & Academics

Carleton University is best known for its journalism and public affairs programs, which are routinely ranked among the best in the nation. These programs are offered under the School of Journalism and Communications as well as the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, both part of the Faculty of Public Affairs. The School of Public Administration is the oldest such school in Canada and its most respected. The Arthur Kroger College of Public Affairs offers Canada's only honours Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management.

In addition, Carleton University offers a wide variety of majors in the arts and social sciences, science, business, and engineering and design. The engineering program offered Canada's first industrial design degree.

Carleton University receives good rankings from most major ranking organizations. In 2012, Macleans named the school the sixth best in Canada.

Student Life

The Carleton University campus is known for its modernist architecture, as well as its series of underground tunnels which connect major campus buildings. These underground tunnels are greatly appreciated by students during the long, cold winters and rainy springs. The campus has eleven residence halls offering traditional dorm living or nontraditional suite-style accommodations. The halls house more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and each dormitory (called a House) is named for a county in Ontario.

Students are represented by the Carlton University Students' Association, local 1 of the Canadian Federation of Students, a union well known for its political activism. Residential students have their own additional residence hall association, and there is a separate student union for graduate students. The student newspaper is called the Charlatan, which despite its name, aims to report the truth. A second newspaper, The Resin, is published specifically for dorm residents, and a third newspaper, the Centretown News is produced by the School of Journalism for the local community.

The University offers a wide range of sports and extracurricular activities, as well as several fraternities and sororities with local and international affiliations.
